Today is Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day: a wonder to behold and the feat of millions of men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping this country — *our* country — alive. Think of the generosity: beyond the people you know and love, your family, kin, friends, cronies, *we* includes people you’ve never met, people you don’t like, people who don’t give a flying fuck about you or this country you both share. This act of generosity, multiplied by hundreds of thousands, is an energetic founding principle that should also guide our politics.
